DEFY Magazine

DEFY Magazine provides a unique approach to the way today’s youth can positively channel their creativity. Celebrating the individuality of young artists, and providing a different perspective on how their ideas can truly affect society is the philosophy of the magazine. Instead of providing creative ideas for a for-profit company, or to communicate an intricate marketing scheme, DEFY aims to show youth the lighter side of the industry, where they can design for social change, and with the genuine intention of changing the world, one step at a time.

No Strings Attached

For ‘No Strings Attached’ I partnered up with my talented peer Andrew Conlon. For this project, we were asked to express our point-of-view on a personal fixation. We then were to take these ideas, and explore them through animation and loops within the footage.

We both found that we shared  an odd admiration for notebooks. His specific passion was practicing journal writing, while mine was expressing my dreams. We decided to connect these three concepts and develop a narrative around them. From there, the notebook became the hub of the project, where journal writing was the action, and dreams were the subject.

We then listed a number of our personal dreams and goals, and chose to rotoscope a short clip that depicted each one; from the Golden Gate Bridge representing my dream to live in San Francisco, to a diver representing Andrew’s dream of becoming an Olympic swimmer.

Through ‘No Strings Attached’ we brought the act of journal writing alive. With our dreams leaping off the page, we wanted to show others not only our belief in ourselves and in our aspirations, but also, our belief that with the right frame of mind, everyone’s dreams have the chance to come true.
