I grew up in the Niagara Region. I have always been creative which has led me to the big city of Toronto. Along with design I am learning American Sign Language. The YSDN program has assured me that design is what I'm meant to do in life. My philosophy about design is that it has to be functional, practical and sustainable. Where I may differ from others in the field is that I believe aesthetics are important, but not the main focus. The ideal execution combines aesthetics with functionality. It is my goal to develop the methods and create the solutions to accomplish this.

Fashion and Design Festival

The Toronto Fashion & Design Festival in collaboration with The Bay have put together a tremendous three day event. This event is to encourage a great range of people, to partake in a social and inspirational outdoor fashion phenomenon.

The design intentions for this out-going, fresh event is to evoke creativity and excitement. The design projects expression and style. This is achieved by capturing the audience attention through exciting and attractive visuals. The main visual is an abstract image of fabric, it captures the motion of run-way fashion. The colour scheme is vibrant and bright. The typography used embodies grace, elegance and personality. This festival is an experience that expresses the exciting fashion and design industry of Canada.

Learning American Sign Language

What this project hopes to achieve is to be an experimental/interesting way for children to learn American Sign language. The book animates the action of the sign and has colourful images to maintain interest within a younger demographic. This will hopefully act as a tool to educate children on how to sign and create an enjoyable experience in doing so. Studying American Sign Language is a very interesting process, it involves understanding the language/culture and their unique approach to learning visually. This book has a huge potential to be successful in teaching a language through a visual process.

This process of scanimation is inspired by a childrens book called ‘Gallop’ by Rufus Butler Seder. My concept was to use the scanimation technique to show how to sign. I believe it is a very effective way to teach such an elaborate language. ASL can be complicated in its diagrams, descriptions and videos, this form combines all these things into an exciting book. Overall this book is meant to be an enjoyable and engaging method of learning.

Recycle this Magazine, reaches out to a younger generation, ages 18-35 years old. The goal of this magazine is to teach people the importance of saving and conserving the environment. It also inspires the reader on an educational, practical, and moral level.  The front cover of this particular issue is an image of a rural area. The eerie feeling encourages the viewer to see the environment depicted as possibly disappearing or becoming destroyed. The magazine features informative articles, personal stories, and beneficial ways to improve our world and motivates and creates awareness within the reader about effective ways of making a difference.

The Major League Soccer (MLS) visual identity needs to be a more recognizable, dynamic and strong representation of professional soccer in North America. Soccer is the most popular sport in the world, but is still in its relative infancy in North America. MLS does not have the history, tradition or respect it deserves. It does however have a huge fan base of supporters and an enormous opportunity to make the league more elite and valuable. Through a new corporate identity MLS can draw more attention to the league by making it more well known, memorable, celebrated and ultimately more honourable.
