Fish Bowl – Independent study

Fish Bowl: “The Game of Recyclable Fun”

Fish Bowl is a family board game. The recyclable, re-usable theme can be seen in the actual dynamics of how the game is played as well as in the game elements and packaging structure.

The idea behind how the game structure was created, was to ensure sustainable design principles throughout its development. As a decorative surface, packaging speaks to the passing consumer, whispering and sometimes screaming, “buy me.” The result can be seen on shelves loaded with bright paperboard boxes, shiny foils and lavish and colorful plastic bags. Visually exciting, surely, but what becomes of the beautiful box and the slick wrapper once it’s opened?

The following principles were employed in the creation of  FISH BOWL:

* Eliminate excess or unnecessary material
* Be made as light as possible without sacrificing durability.
* Be made with nontoxic, renewable materials
* Be manufactured and transported using renewable energy.
* Be designed for intentional reuse.
* Be easily disassembled for appropriate disposal channels.
* Be compostable, or at least recyclable.

BOLD YOUR FACE

This is a retro-funk typeface. This reference highlights an aesthetic that includes a “Retro” and “Funk” sensibility. It is stylish and modern in an unconventional way.  Something that is deemed as “Retro” tends to incorporate the use of psychedelic colours and loud shapes. It was created to be BOLD & IN YOUR FACE, hence the name, “BOLD-YOUR-FACE”

It is a chunky font that has a lot of character. There is nothing clean or pristine about it. It is LOUD and UNFORGIVING. It says what it says and holds no regrets. It is what it is. Usage of Vibrant t-shirts and screen printing colours add to the flare and style of the typeface.

The type face was created for a t-shirt line called, “Like-a-Fire”. This company deals with  print graphics and tactile media. They have promoted the font with a line of t-shirts as well as the main poster with the font showing. The t-shirts add to the essence of the font by its catch phrase, “He must become greater” It speaks to ideals of the type face. BOLDER, BIGGER, GREATER & IN YOUR FACE.
