The Valve Corporation Redesign was a project aimed at redesigning the titular organization’s corporate identity, a video game development and digital distribution company. Valve was selected because of its relatively young age, having only been founded in 1996, as well as having a distinct background that was ripe with material for new development. What became clear during the research stage was their distinct philosophy, drawing from its independent roots, connection to its audience, and a commitment to high quality products and services. Its visual style was largely influenced by its namesake, taking on a grungy, industrial theme. It was also affected by its flagship title known as Half-Life, a video game applying elements of chemistry and industrial decay into its aesthetic. All of this would form the basis for the redesign, sticking close to Valve’s corporate identity, but expanding on them to better represent those ideals.
