What this project hopes to achieve is to be an experimental/interesting way for children to learn American Sign language. The book animates the action of the sign and has colourful images to maintain interest within a younger demographic. This will hopefully act as a tool to educate children on how to sign and create an enjoyable experience in doing so. Studying American Sign Language is a very interesting process, it involves understanding the language/culture and their unique approach to learning visually. This book has a huge potential to be successful in teaching a language through a visual process.
This process of scanimation is inspired by a childrens book called ‘Gallop’ by Rufus Butler Seder. My concept was to use the scanimation technique to show how to sign. I believe it is a very effective way to teach such an elaborate language. ASL can be complicated in its diagrams, descriptions and videos, this form combines all these things into an exciting book. Overall this book is meant to be an enjoyable and engaging method of learning.
